Robi installs solar-powered base stations as part of green drive

Bangladeshi operator Robi Axiata has revealed plans to power more than 1600 base stations using renewable solar energy.

Robi claims the move as a national first and argues that it will relieve Bangladesh’s national grid, noting that it has equipped its offices with solar panels capable of generating 10KW of power. The solar cells installed at its base stations generate around 8.4MW.

In line with parent firm Axiata’s push for greener operations, Robi has implemented additional measures to cut energy consumption at its workspaces. These including powering down generators and lifts on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and removing employee transport offerings on these days.

With these commitments, Robi expects to reduce its carbon emissions by 55% by 2030, with the goal of achieving net-zero by 2050.
