Russia strikes Kyivstar headquarters amid attacks on Ukrainian telecoms infrastructure

Russia has struck the headquarters of Ukrainian operator Kyivstar as part of a wider series of attacks on data centres and communications infrastructure across the country.

Kyivstar confirmed to Interfax-Ukraine that its head office in Kyiv was damaged in a Russian attack on Sunday, but said no employees were injured. The building had previously been damaged in attacks earlier this month.

Russia's defence ministry also said it had struck a data centre belonging to Vodafone Ukraine, although the operator had not confirmed the attack to Reuters. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia had struck a data centre in Kyiv twice on Sunday morning, with two children and an adult injured.

The latest attacks follow a series of strikes on data centres and other infrastructure used by Ukrainian internet providers. Data centres operated by providers including UTELS, Pavutyna and Datagroup have been damaged in attacks during the past week, with some operators relying on backup sites to maintain services.

Ukraine's digital ministry said earlier attacks on data centres had disrupted services to around 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region, according to Reuters.

The attacks highlight the vulnerability of Ukraine's communications infrastructure, which has remained operational during the war through network redundancy, backup facilities and rapid restoration work.

Ukraine's foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia was targeting major Ukrainian data centres in an effort to disrupt the flow of information. He also said rapid alerts about missile and drone threats were important for saving lives.
