Telecom Cambodia has signed an infrastructure-sharing agreement with Viettel’s local unit Metfone that will see the operators start jointly trialling 5G this month.

VNExpress reported that the state-owned Telecom Cambodia and Viettel would split the funding for a raft of initiatives focused on areas including e-agriculture, e-education, e-health, IoT and smart cities.

Metfone leads the market in Cambodia with a market share approaching 50%, while Hanoi-headquartered Viettel – which is wholly owned by Vietnam’s Ministry of Defence – leads the Vietnamese market with a share of over 40%.

In Cambodia, Smart Axiata recently claimed the country’s first live 5G trial at one of its outlets in Phnom Penh. The operator used a Huawei device to demonstrate the technology.

Viettel claims to have made Vietnam’s first 5G call in May this year, after being licensed to use the 3.8GHz and 28GHz bands for testing purposes in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
